TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication

What is it?

A worldwide valid certificate that is highly respected in the business field to facilitate the hiring of foreign professionals, serving the test as a tool to assess the English proficiency of your prospective hires. It is the most used test in the business field. This preparation will take place through the development of the two skills that make up the test: Listening and Reading, using material with the objective of improving the understanding of the language in use and awakening the student to the necessary strategies aiming at achieving a good final result, the score desired in the test. Tactics for TOEIC Listening and Reading was developed and endorsed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and consists of test questions already applied.

How's the test?

Currently, there are 2 types of TOEIC exams:

  1. Listening & Reading
  2. Speaking & Writing.

These are the four English language skills you must possess to secure your certificate.

The exam is drawn up by an American institution, so the predominant English accent of the test will be that of the United States – but there is nothing to prevent other accents, such as the Australian or the British, for example.

The issues are embedded in specific contexts of a company’s daily life, such as: negotiations and sales, telephone calls, planning and meetings, writing emails, among others.

Structure of the Test

The Listening & Reading exam has a duration of 2 and a half hours, since in total it contains 200 multiple choice questions, with 100 questions for Listening and 100 questions for Reading.

Listening – Questions (45 minutes)

  1. Photos – 20;
  2. Understanding mini dialogues – 50;
  3. Questions and answers – 30.

Reading – Questions (75 minutes)

  1. Complete sentences – 40;
  2. Text comprehension – 40;
  3. Find errors – 20.

Several of these questions should be asked using Listening and Reading simultaneously.

Writing – Questions (60 minutes)

  1. Describe photos – 5;
  2. Answers – 2;
  3. Wording – 1.

Speaking – Questions (20 minutes – online)

  1. Read texts aloud – 2;
  2. Image Descriptions – 1;
  3. Express opinion and solutions – 2;
  4. Answer questions – 6.

Punctuation

In order to obtain the TOEIC certificate, you must obtain a minimum grade of 185. Notes below this score classify the applicant as not qualified for English language communication.

The levels of proficiency are divided as follows:

  1. Memorized Proficiency: 185 – 250;
  2. Elementary Proficiency: 255 – 400;
  3. Elementary Proficiency Plus: 405 – 600;
  4. Limits Working Proficiency: 605 – 780;
  5. Working Proficiency Plus: 785 – 900;
  6. International Proficiency: 905 – 990.

The certificates have a short duration, since the language is constantly changing. Therefore, each certificate is valid for up to 2 years.

Another important detail is that although scores determine the proficiency of students’ level of English proficiency, the certificate is given according to a color classification.

Therefore, the TOEIC is divided by color. Each color equals an average score. Here’s how the color interferes with punctuation:

  • Green: 470 – 725
  • Blue: 730 – 855
  • Gold: 900 – 990

The TOEIC grades start at 0 and can reach as high as 990, as we have already said. Yet again it is worth saying again, too, that he does not disapprove. Then, without despair. Do everything calmly and with the certainty that you will do well.

Dates, Values and Payments

The price of the exam currently revolves around US $ 250 (approximately R$ 950,00) and the amount can be parceled up to 4 times on credit cards.
