Practice English with music

How to learn English by listening to music

One of the most suggested tips for learning or improving English is to listen to music, as it is entertainment that everyone likes, and seek to know what the songs speak. But how can I not make mistakes and really learn English with music? See our tips:

Discover a music tool to get acquainted

There are those who like to listen to music with the clip on YouTube or Video, and who likes audio only, as in Spotify – where you can follow the lyrics together through Musixmatch. The important thing is to choose a tool that can be used several times a week and in the most different situations, such as in the bus, in the interval of the college, in the lunch of the company, etc.

Choose songs that are well pronounced

The good thing about music is that there is colloquial language and use of expressions and slang. But opt for those in which English is correct – a rap or heavy metal, for example, may not be the best styles to fully understand what is spoken.

One option is to start with Disney songs and other children’s songs, to understand the language as pronounced as possible. Or with romantic pop, as musicians sing more slowly and with frequent repetitions of words and phrases (which is great for absorbing them!).

If possible music with voice and guitar only, where there are not many musical instruments to compete with the grammatical interpretation. Searching for famous songs with covers is a great choice.

Browse lyrics on specialized websites

There are several websites that offer song lyrics. Some examples: Letras.mus.br, Vagalume and Musixmatch. Always listen to the songs by following what they say to associate what you read with the correct pronunciation.

If you have time, have a white sheet next to it and after listening to the song for the first time write down the words that are unknown and start a list of vocabularies that you can read from time to time.

When there is doubt in a word, search for its meaning

Do not get hit by a phrase you do not understand. There are dictionaries on the Internet of English-Portuguese, but the best thing is to search for those who speak the meaning in English – explaining in the language itself what the word means (another chance to become familiar with the language).

We give you the Linguee online dictionary, which in addition to bringing you the individual meaning of each word, also works expressions and cultural insertions! it’s worth it, check it out!

Sing together

That part is essential! When you sing aloud, accompanying with the written lyrics, pronounce well and better absorb what is said. Even if you have difficulties in the beginning, persist! After a while, it will sing right (and will speak English better than before). This will help greatly to unlock the tongue, to train the accents, to lose the shyness and to make my brain listen to itself, identifying in the future grammatical errors in advance. Let yourself go!

Search for new songs

Do not settle for a single song. Always search for more letters to learn and discover new words and expressions! Make a list with different rhythms, slow for comprehension, quick to practice pronunciation, paced, venture out! Create a playlist with at least 50 songs and go alternating study and fun for a while until they all begin to be recognized and comfortable to sing! Believe me, it works!

Understand what instrumental English is

Being bilingual is one of the essential requirements for securing a job in a multinational company. However, only English used for casual conversation is not enough to perform specific and targeted professional tasks, since the language itself is used in everyday business, with all the terms and expressions specific to a business branch, -mails, conference calls, contracts, among others requires a more in-depth study of the language.

What is English instrumental?

They are intended to instruct and guide professionals in the study of Business English. Initially it was known as English for Specific Purposes or ESP, and it is nothing more than studies of English for Specific Purposes, using techniques that consist of fast, directive, assimilative, sensory and accurate learning of the foreign language with a defined professional purpose.

What is instrumental English for?

A few years ago professional English was more focused on reading and writing than on speaking. Nowadays this does not exist, since the availability of so many different speech technologies that help control our daily time, allowing quicker and more agile results, just understanding foreign books and articles is not enough. Instrumental English is much sought after by professionals who seek to improve their knowledge in areas such as medicine, law, information technology, tourism, administration, finance and others.

Instrumental English is also used for people who study for public examinations, entrance examinations, theses or proficiency tests aimed at a master’s or doctorate degree, as well as students who seek to participate in projects abroad.

The main topics of a fundamental English course cover fundamental points of structure and interpretation of text. Therefore, reading techniques, combined with grammar studies and specific vocabulary of the studied area are widely used in these classes.

You look gorgeous! – Você está maravilhoso(a)!
She is a pretty girl. – Ela é uma linda menina.
He is a handsome guy. – Ele é um lindo rapaz.
He is really good looking. – Ele é muito atraente.
I find you super intelligent. – Eu acho você superinteligente.
You look nice in that blouse. – Você fica muito bem nesta blusa.
You have beautiful eyes! – Você tem olhos lindos!
I like your style. – Eu gosto do seu estilo.

Your friends are so cool! – Seus amigos são muito legais!
You look stunning in that suit. – Você está deslumbrante neste terno.
I think he’s a very attractive man. – Eu o acho um homem muito atraente.
You look nice in this dress, that color is perfect on you. – Você está linda neste vestido, esta cor fica perfeita em você.
Your smile is contagious. – Seu sorriso é contagiante.
You have the best laugh ever! – Você tem a melhor risada do mundo!
I like your T-shirt, where did you get it? – Gostei da sua camiseta, onde você comprou?
I love your shoes! – Amei seus sapatos!

I find your accent really cute. – Eu acho seu sotaque muito bonitinho.
You are so patient! – Você é tão paciente!

E se for você quem recebeu o elogio?

Quando somos elogiados, normalmente ficamos sem saber o que dizer por ser inesperado. Nesses casos, é sempre interessante agradecer pela gentileza da pessoa:

Thanks for the compliment. – Obrigado(a) pelo elogio.
Thank you, you too! – Obrigado(a), você também!
Thank you, you are very kind. – Obrigado(a), você é muito gentil.
Thanks! It’s very nice of you to say so! – Obrigado(a)! É muito legal de sua parte dizer isso!
Thank you! I’m glad you think so. – Obrigado(a)!

Excuse me, but… (Com licença, mas…)
Independente do que esteja acontecendo de errado, usar o bom e velho “Com licença” é sempre uma ótima forma de se manifestar, seja para entender o que está havendo ou para fazer uma reclamação.
Ex.: Excuse me, but the music is too loud and I am trying to sleep (Com licença, mas a música está alta demais, e eu estou tentando dormir.)

Can you help me with this? (Pode me ajudar com isso?)
Fazer um pedido de ajuda para resolver algo é uma boa forma de fazer uma reclamação sem parecer mal-educado.
Ex.: Can you help me with this? My juice was bitter. (Você pode me ajudar com isso? Meu suco está amargo.)

Sorry to bother you, but… (Desculpe lhe incomodar, mas…)
Outro jeito educado e ameno é começar uma reclamação é pedindo desculpas
Ex.: I’m sorry to bother you, but this is not what I ordered. (“Me desculpe incomodar, mas isso não é o que pedi.”)

I’m afraid there is a slight problem with… (Acho que há um pequeno problema com…)
Use essa expressão quando perceber que algo simples e rápido de ser resolvido está errado.
Ex.: I’m afraid there is a slight problem with the computer you sold me. (“Acho que há um probleminha com o computador que você me vendeu. )

I understand it’s not your fault. However… (Eu entendo que isso não é sua culpa. Contudo…)
Quando precisar lidar com alguém que não é diretamente responsável pelo problema, mas que pode providenciar a solução, ajuda dizer que você entende que a culpa não é daquela pessoa.
Ex.: I understand it’s not your fault, however my shirt was delivered dirty. (Sei que não é culpa sua, mas minha camisa foi entregue suja).

I’m afraid there is a misunderstanding. (Acho que há um mal-entendido.)
Para suavizar a ideia de que houve um erro, você pode usar “misunderstanding”.
Ex.: I’m afraid there is a misunderstanding. My bag is gray, this one is brown. (Acho que houve um engano. Minha mala é cinza, essa é marrom.”)

Mantendo a linha da educação, assim que resolverem seu problema, lembre-se de agradecer em inglês também!
